Dr. Alicia M. Logan
Assistant Professor of Nursing

Dr. Alicia M. Logan, DNP, MS, BS, BSN, RN, serves as an Assistant Professor of Nursing at the University of Montevallo. With a diverse academic background and extensive experience in the field, Dr. Logan brings a wealth of knowledge to her role as an educator and researcher.

Dr. Logan’s research interests span critical areas in healthcare, with a particular focus on:

  • Social determinants of health in minority women and underserved populations
  • Maternal and child health
  • Integration of technology and artificial intelligence to improve student outcomes

Currently, Dr. Logan is engaged in groundbreaking research examining generational and matrilineal legacies in breastfeeding decision-making among sorority-initiated African American women. This innovative study aims to shed light on the complex interplay of cultural, social, and familial factors influencing maternal health choices.

Through her work, Dr. Logan continues to contribute valuable insights to the nursing field, addressing pressing healthcare disparities and advancing educational practices in nursing.

Dr. Charman Harper
Assistant Professor of Nursing

Dr. Charman Harper is an Assistant Professor of Nursing and Simulation Lab Director. Dr. Charman Harper comes to the University of Montevallo after holding the position of Market Nurse Educator for Brookwood Baptist Health Systems for the past four years.

Her primary roles and responsibilities were providing educational training to the nursing staff and other staff members at Shelby Baptist Medical Center. In addition, she served on ten hospital committees, was involved with five health science academies in Shelby County and served on three local advisory committees. Before becoming a hospital educator, she worked as a medical surgical nurse and COVID nurse on the Covid unit. In addition, she was an adjunct clinical instructor for Jefferson State Community College for five years and an adjunct clinical instructor for UAB School of Nursing for four years.

She completed her Doctor of Nursing Practice at the University of North Alabama. Her DNP project was Applying SAMSHA Trauma-Informed Principles to a New Graduate Nurse Residency Program for Retention. She was awarded the Florence Nightingale Award in 2019 by the Nursing faculty at the University of North Alabama. Nursing is a second career, the first career being in Social Work. She holds a license in Alabama as a registered nurse and social worker. Dr. Harper is a current member of the American Nurses Association, the Alabama Nurses Association, the Sigma International Honor Society, the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, and the National League for Nursing. She is ANCC Board Certified as a Medical Surgical Nursing. She loves serving the Shelby County community and received the Shelby County Chamber Healthcare Professional of the Year 2024 – Committed to Community Award in March 2024

Ms. Beth Lawyer
Instructor of Nursing

Ms. Beth Lawyer received her BSN from the University of South Alabama. She received her MSN with a focus on nursing education from the University of North Alabama. Her clinical background includes the Emergency Department and PACU. She has worked in a diverse range of hospitals in various regions of the country as a travel nurse for several years.

Before she came to the University of Montevallo, she held a full-time position as a Skills Lab Educator at the UAB School of Nursing. There, she gained experience instructing pre-licensure students in the BSN and AMNP programs. She also holds experience in simulation with undergraduate and graduate programs at UAB School of Nursing. Experience in simulation externally including Children’s of Alabama, AirMed, and interprofessional such as with UAB Medical students and Physician Assistant students.

Ms. Lawyer has experience as a Clinical Associate at Samford University and as an Adjunct Instructor in a Critical Care Skills course at UAB School of Nursing. She maintains her skills in the clinical setting through her PRN employment at a local free standing Emergency Department. Ms. Lawyer also loves using her nursing skills while serving on medical mission trips. Ms. Lawyer serves as the Faculty Advisor for the Student Nurses Association at UM.
